OSHA REGULATIONS FOR THE PHYSICIAN OFFICE

This 3.5 hour seminar covers four OSHA regulations that affect all physician offices. In 1992, 90% of offices that were fined by OSHA, were fined for violations other than the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard. It is important for physician to be aware of ALL standards that they should be in compliance with. The new regulations concerning Tuberculosis will be covered. TUBERCULOSIS GUIDELINES: - INFECTION CONTROL FOR THE PHYSICIAN OFFICE

OSHA "TRAIN THE TRAINER

This intense training program will teach the office manager, nursing supervisor or laboratory representative how to perform their own office regulatory evaluation for OSHA and Medical Waste. Session is full day (7.5 hr.). The presentation is given with 35 mm slides and extensive handouts. The program covers the fundamentals of safety regulations. Participants will work with customized OSHA manuals. Checklists are provided to help them evaluate their own office. Ample time is given for questions and answers. Offices can now learn how present their own OSHA safety training programs using the information and handouts provided. By understanding the regulations the office representative will easily be able to implement policies! "ERGONOMICS AND SAFETY POLICIES FOR THE OFFICE STAFF”

Workman's compensation claims for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) from prolonged and incorrect computer use, is the fastest growing job related health problem. Back problems are the number one claim for health care workers according to OSHA reports. OSHA has released a proposed ergonomic standard and although a final standard has not been published, OSHA has stated that inspection for compliance can be performed under OSHA's "general duty clause". It is imperative that offices start addressing these safety issues and provide the office staff with information. Putting policies in place and making the necessary changes will reduce future claims for injuries. MRSA - WHAT EVERY OFFICE NEEDS TO KNOW

The most potent antibiotics are no longer a match for many drug-resistant bacteria’s. Why? When antibiotics are given the body has the ability to adapt. Most bacteria is killed by the antibiotics but others have the ability to resist and mutate. This mutation gives the bacteria the ability to overcome the antibiotic. Although the majority of MRSA infections occur among patients in hospitals or other healthcare settings, it is becoming more common in the community setting. CLIA REGULATIONS FOR THE PHYSICIAN OFFICE LABORATORY

This 3.5 hour seminar covers the basic components of meeting the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) regulations. Personnel standards, testing levels, quality assurance, quality control, procedure manuals, proficiency testing and record keeping are just a few of the areas that will be covered. Comprehensive handouts for regulatory guidance are supplied.

CLIA INSPECTIONS - THE 12 MOST COMMON VIOLATIONS

This seminar will review the 12 most common areas of non-compliance when offices are inspected for CLIA certification. Each topic contains information on what is needed to correct the problem. WAIVED TESTS - THEY’RE NOT FOOLPROOF

This program examines the history of Waived/PPM CLIA regulations, lists the pro’s and con’s of performing simple tests, identifies the original list of tests and new tests that have been added, explains what is meant by “good laboratory practice” and identifies area’s of testing that can either make the test accurate or compromise the test result. This program runs 2 hours. Area’s of compliance can be added to make this test 3 hours.

SPECIMEN COLLECTION 101

This seminar requires a VCR and is geared to the staff of the physician who collects specimens. Specimen collection and preparation is an important part of performing an accurate laboratory test. This is an excellent review! (allow 3 hours - unless topics are broken down). * Program is also available as a self-study program.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

ALL offices - from waived to high complexity should follow quality assurance (QA) policies to monitor the testing process. HCFA has stressed that the second round of inspection will focus more on quality assurance documentation. How do you develop a QA plan? What do inspectors want to see? An effective QA plan includes the pre-analytical process, patient test management, testing, quality control, instrument and environment maintenance and post-testing policies. An extensive QA plan with forms and checklists is provided to all participants to customize to their testing needs. A per student charge of $35 for handouts is required. (2.5 hours)

HOW TO ACE PROFICIENCY TESTING

All physician offices were to be enrolled in an approved proficiency testing (PT) program for all moderate and high complexity testes they perform in-house as of January 1994. As of 1995 there are sanctions for failure. This seminar goes over how to choose a PT company that best serves your needs, record keeping, rules for performing PT and how to investigate PT failure. SELECTING A HEMATOLOGY OR CHEMISTRY INSTRUMENT FOR THE OFFICE

Physicians often make poor decisions when selecting instrumentation for the office. This seminar gives a check list of questions every physician should ask a sales person BEFORE signing on the dotted line! How to perform a realistic cost evaluation and options on purchasing will be covered. If the audience is large - some equipment can be brought in to view and talk with company representatives. PASSING A CLIA INSPECTION

This 2.5 hour seminar reviews what to expect when you have your first office laboratory inspection. The 11 areas of inspection, proficiency testing, government forms and record keeping are covered. It is advantageous to be prepared and pass the inspection the first time. Inspection day is not the time to find out you were not prepared. (This seminar is only 1.5 hours when given in combination with the CLIA Regulation seminar)

UNDERSTANDING COMMON LAB RESULTS

This seminar is geared to the staff of the physician. Often the people working in the physician office are not experienced nurses and medical personnel. This seminar goes over what "high" and "low" results mean for some of the most common tests performed in the office. Knowing this information will make reading lab reports and understanding how they relate to medical conditions more interesting. (1.5 hour) * This program is also available as a self-study program.

THROAT CULTURES AND URINE CULTURES

Throat and Urine cultures are performed routinely in many physician offices. Cultures require skill and knowledge of the tester and quality control documentation. This seminar is an excellent review of "good laboratory technique". Charts to record controls are part of the handouts. Seminar will cover rapid and blood plate strep, urine culture paddle tests (colony counts & identification) and antibiotic sensitivities.
